You’re about to discover the most coveted secret of the Sierra Foothills – the area we call Fair Play. Although Fair Play was once a thriving rural mining, agricultural and timber outpost of the Gold Rush, now our reference to the name Fair Play has broader meanings. Anchored by the world class winegrowing region officially known as Fair Play AVA (American Viticultural Area), these beautiful byways of the Sierra Foothills include the communities of Fair Play, Mt. Aukum, Somerset and Omo Ranch. Nestled amongst the pine and oak forests of 2,000 to over 3,000 feet in elevation, the bucolic nature of our rural setting is both serene and breathtaking.

What started in the late 1970s in other parts of El Dorado County and neighboring Amador County, the return of winegrowing began in earnest in Fair Play with the opening of Somerset Vineyards (pioneer Brian Fitzpatrick with Bill Bertram and brother Michael Fitzpatrick) in 1980 grew to 28 wineries as of 2011. The grape varietals grown here in Fair Play are as varied as the local winemakers and grape growers who have rushed in from all over to make Fair Play their home. Although Zinfandel anchors the list, world classics like Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Sangiovese, Barbera, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Viogneir and more are planted here.

The quality of the wines coupled with their modest prices make Fair Play wines a California BEST VALUE bar none. Add to that the warm friendly welcome one finds entering 27 tasting rooms, all visitors experience "Wines with an Altitude". About an hour from California's capital, Sacramento, the Fair Play experience awaits even the daytripper but true gold can only be found by checking in to our B&Bs for a several night stay.
